Wallace Homitz
Looking at our own civilization in the throes of a graceless demise, we have come suddenly again upon the Indian in our midst; and we are impressed, not only by his durability—25,000 years in the Western hemisphere alone —but also by the way he seems to have kept intact a way of living rooted in values that now loom as keys to our very survival.

This portfolio consists of twenty-three photographs of which eleven are published here. They came together over a period of eight months. The individual objects chose themselves and eventually arranged themselves. Three concepts have been operative.

ZEN CAMERA or The Un-making of the Photographer
Zen belongs to the tradition of Yoga and philosophical Taoism in offering pragmatic suggestions on how to see what exists outside of the confusion of our desires and illusions. In Japan, this philosophy matured in the 13th century through the writings of the monk Dogen. The present article extends the reasons and methods of Dogen to an aesthetic of camera work. Zen philosophy claims that if we follow its physical and mental discipline, then we will wake up to existence or Being without self-illusion. For the mature man the achievement of such perception may answer the problem of why photograph and why make pictures within the awareness of evolving consciousness.

Edward Putzar

In the Cosmic Age since the early 20th century, no degree of tinkering with our basically Realistic (Idealistic) philosophy has produced an adequate aesthetic theory. A ringing loneliness has overtaken the West, undispelled by power trips, new economics, or drugs.
