Could Crush Mightiest Girders
SO POWERFUL that it can crumple a huge steel I-beain as if it were made of cardboard, this Hercules of machines, at the right, the largest testing machine in the world, can exert a crushing force of 10,000,000 pounds! No conceivable stress to which a girder might ever be subjected could eyen approximate this force. The machine is used at the Bureau of Standards, Washington, D. C., for testing structural members, with the object of determining how much weight they can withstand without buckling. The results of the tests become a part of engineers’ books of tables, to be used in designing towering structures of steel.
