CLINTON TURNED BLIND EYE TO ARKANSAS CONTRA CONNECTIONS
Arkansas Airport "Hub" of Drugs and Guns Pipeline
An independent group of researchers in Arkansas is charging that Governor Bill Clinton is covering up an airport used by the CIA and major cocaine smugglers in a remote corner of the Ozark Mountains. According to Debra Robinson of the Arkansas Committee, the Intermountain Regional Airport in Mena, AK, continues to be the hub of operations for people like assassinated cocaine smuggler Barry Seal as well as government intelligence operations linked to arms and drug smuggling.
In the 1980s the Mena airport became one of the world’s largest aircraft-refurbishing centers, providing services to planes from many countries. Researchers claim that the largest consumers of aircraft refurbishing services are drug smugglers and intelligence agencies involved in covert activities. Residents of Mena claim that both former Marine Lt. Col. Oliver North and pilot Eugene Hasenfus—shot down in a contra supply plane over Nicaragua in 1986—were frequent visitors.
A federal grand jury looking into activities at the Mena airport refused to hand down any indictments after drugrunning charges were made public. Debra Robinson says that Clinton “ignored the situation” until he began his presidential campaign. Clinton then said he would provide money for a state investigation, but according to Robinson the promise was never followed up. In fact a local Arkansas state prosecutor blasted Clinton’s promise of an investigation, comparing it to “spitting on a forest fire.”
Terry Reed, a former employee of the CIA’s Air America smuggling caper in Laos during the Indochina war, claims to have been recruited as a pilot trainer into the Iran-contra operation by Oliver North. According to court documents, Reed attempted to quit the operation when he discovered that cocaine was coming back on CIA planes from Central America.
Reed was later charged with mail fraud for claiming insurance for an aircraft that was used by North’s network under a plan called Operation Donation. Reed, who was eventually cleared of charges, was arrested after the missing plane was discovered at Mena by an underling of Clinton’s security chief Buddy Young. How Young’s man discovered the plane was never explained, and the judge in the case expressed grave doubts about his testimony.
Robinson says the people running Arkansas, like Bill Clinton, must be held “accountable for what they are doing” in the War on Drugs.
When Clinton’s campaign headquarters was asked by HIGH TIMES for a response to the allegations, they referred us to a state police official, who said that Clinton had taken a “hands-off approach” to the investigation.
MORE DIRT ON CLINTON
The February 7 New York Post front -page story detailed Clinton’s ties to the Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI) scandal. Clinton’s top financial backer, Arkansas tycoon Jackson Stephens, helped broker BCCI’s illegal takeover of two US banks—First American Bankshares and the National Bank of Georgia. The US foothold allowed BCCI to more effectively serve as a massive laundering operation for drug trafficking and CIA covert activities. •
