OUR NEW PUBLISHER
Have you noticed a proliferation of book, video and product ads in HIGH TIMES? Have you witnessed the appearance of hemp satchels and tote bags in our pages? Are you aware of the expansion of the HIGH TIMES hotline?
Ever since Operation Green Merchant devastated our advertising base, many people wondered whether HIGH TIMES would survive. Well, we are flourishing, despite the worst recession the magazine business has seen in over thirty years. The issue in your hands is the 200th the company has produced since 1974. We are celebrating by announcing the presidential candidacy of ganja’s favorite son: Chef RA.
Much of our current success is due to our former Executive Editor, John Holmstrom, who single-handedly created a products industry out of our offices. John’s efforts have not gone unnoticed or unappreciated. He was recently named publisher of HIGH TIMES.
John’s history with HIGH TIMES goes back to the late ’70s. Our founder Tom Forçade was a big fan of Punk magazine, which was created by John and his high school buddy Legs McNeil. He was so impressed with the Punk movement that he produced a documentary film covering the Sex Pistol’s tour of America (titled D.O.A.) and signed a distribution deal with Punk magazine.
I first met John when I was working on my book Art After Midnight, a history of the art-rock nexus on New York’s Lower East Side. After I was hired by HIGH TIMES, I immediately asked John to get re-involved with the magazine. I made a good decision: He’s the hardest working man in the magazine business.
